Patisserie Liberté

Patisserie Liberté was an independent French pâtisserie, cafe and French produce retailer based in Manchester’s burgeoning Northern Quarter district.

Liberté opened in December 2016 on Hilton Street, serving a range of single origin coffees, luxury teas and original, French pâtisseries, cakes, pastries and sweets – with the aim of bringing a taste of France to Manchester.

The branding concept for the Liberté project began with the logo design, and the client preference of the pink colour as a core element. The history of the company’s name Liberté (meaning Freedom), founded by the client’s grandfather, was a reference to the Algerian Independence in 1962.

To illustrate the idea of freedom as a central concept of the brand, curved lines designed to represent waving flags were developed. These were used liberally in other areas of the brand as design elements, for menus, stationery, and other print and digital media.

The print media consisted of menus and flyers, gift vouchers and window graphics, exhibition stands and packaging design for speciality teas.

Due to the high density of hospitality shops in Manchester’s Northern quarter, a strong and unique visual identity was developed to stand out from the crowd. A unique selling point with Liberté were it’s French origins and cuisine, and it was through this approach that the design parameters were established.

The Liberté website featured booking forms and menus, plus details of highly skilled pâtisserie chefs who regularly visited from France to create beautiful cakes and sweets in-house in the Liberté kitchen.

The website also featured a Gourmet de France section selling French produce such as chocolates, confitures and sweets plus gift boxes.
